Helen Skelton has opened up about his motivation for signing up for this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing.
The former Blue Peter presenter is one of 15 celebrities currently training for Strictly’s landmark 20th season, which kicks off on Friday night with its annual pre-recorded launch show.
Asked what inspired her to take part in Strictly, Helen admitted: “I just wanted to do something fun!”
“It was a good chance for my family to see me smile,” she continued. “And it’s a fun adventure.
“Anyone who has been involved with Strictly will say the make-up people are the best, the costume people are the best, the set designers are the best, the dancers are the best. So why wouldn’t you want to do something where everyone is literally at the top of their game and loving what they’re doing?”

Helen also shared that she is particularly looking forward to getting ‘Strictly-fied’ ahead of her first appearance, joking: ‘I have three children under the age of seven, a very energetic dog and have lived in a house conversion for the best part of three years , so please, please!”
Ahead of filming this year’s launch show, Helen told HuffPost UK that she is already enjoying the social side of being on Strictly, as her job often requires her to work on her own.
“I’m so giddy, I’m like ‘let’s go for a meal, let’s have a drink’ and everyone’s like ‘fuck of”,” she said with a laugh. “But I’m usually alone [in work situations]. That’s the beauty of this for me.
“In our world you are often alone – not in a lonely way, it’s just the nature of the work. If I’m doing radio, I’m alone. While with this it is nice to be around people who are in the same world. And it’s nice to share something in a team, it’s that team mentality.”

She added: “When I did Antarctica [with Blue Peter]they purposely got me a non-english speaking sound man, because they wanted me to be alone.
“As a true explorer would be on his own, [so they said that] if I was with an English-speaking crew, everyone would say ‘keep it up Helen!’, and they wanted me to get the real experience. So for this… that’s why I talk a lot!”
Strictly returns to our screens on Friday night at 7pm on BBC One, with the first live show of the series airing the following night.
